An informative and enjoyable experience with Blanche Gelabert, author of "The Spirit of Puerto Rican Rum"- Recipes and recollections. Her book and seminar combines the talents of Blanche (as a chef and her knowledge of Puerto Rican History and culture. The one-hour seminar covers history, customs, and idiosyncrasy of Puerto Rico. The seminar also incorporates shopping in Old San Juan and a "Touch and smell" experience of Puerto Rican condiments, herbs and spices.


Monica L. Laird and Her Art

One of the leading watercolorist in the Caribbean, Monica L. Laird has been living and working in Puerto Rico since 1986. Laird believes that the environment of her studio and the island is very much reflected in her work. The artist, among several other activities teaches her "Waterworks" a watercolor workshop at the Tree House Studio. The studio is nestled among flowering ginger and the towering palms trees at the crest of a small mountain in Rio Grande, showered by El Yunque and the Caribbean National Rain Forest.


Reflections of El Yunque

A Private Exhibition with Artist Monica L. Laird - Designed for any size group, this private exhibition will present a collection of the artist's work for viewing. Strongly influenced by the environment in which she lives and works, the paintings offer Laird's interpretations of the tropical environment surrounding her. "Reflections of EL Yunque" can be coordinated to occur during other functions such as banquets, breakfasts, or evening parties. The artist will set up an exhibition space and be accessible for questions and conversation, about her work and her life on the island. The artwork on display will be available for sale.

Puerto Rico Tapestry

A private exhibition and demonstration by Artist, Monica L. Laird - can be designed for large groups. This activity is a combination demonstration and lecture on the artist's approach to her work, what she hopes to accomplish with her paintings and their relevance to the people who view them. While speaking, she will demonstrate one of her painting techniques, starting and finishing her project during the course of the lecture. The artist will then be available for questions and answers during the remainder of the function. The demonstration and lecture will last approximately 1 hour. The artist's work will be on exhibit for viewing and/or purchase during the course of the event.


Visit to the Tree-House Studio of Artist Monica L. Laird

Nestled among the flowering ginger and towering palm tress, the Tree-House Studio sits at the crest of a small mountain in Rio Grand, shadowed by El Yunque and the Caribbean National forest. From the artist's work space to the class room and small gallery below the house, you overlook the northeast coast of the island from San Juan to Fajardo and beyond.

Laird will open her studio, allowing visitors the opportunity to watch a demonstration of one of her techniques, view the paintings and prints on display and talk with the artist about her work and life on the island. The guest can relax and soak up the atmosphere of both a working art studio and the tropical Caribbean. This is an opportunity to see Puerto Rico from both, the eyes of an artist and the eyes of those that live and work here.

Artist in Residence with Monica L. Laird

Perched in a hammock, watching the artist work, the guest views the magnificent tropics through the artist's eyes and his own. The artist will work on site around the pool and beaches, from 10:00 to 3:00 p.m. (or lobby area in case of rain.) Guests are invited to sit with her and watch her work or bring their own materials and work along side of her. For guests who dream of sitting under a palm tree, sipping a piña colada and painting the ocean, this offers them the perfect opportunity to do so.

"Waterworks" Workshop with Monica L. Laird

A fun and challenging way to spend a morning or afternoon, this 4 hour workshop, offers the student the opportunity to learn the basics of watercolor while surrounded by the luxurious tropical ambiance. The students are provided quality materials necessary to complete their projects, including a mat with backing for the framing of their masterpieces. The artist is an entertaining and effective speaker, the perfect hostess for a fun and unique way for the spouses to "play" while learning something about painting and watercolor, in the process. After a few hours of creative activity, students will no doubt become even more enthralled with the colors, shapes and textures they will encounter during their stay in tropical Puerto Rico. (Minimum 10/Maximum 25 students.)


Making Your Mark

"A Happening Lecture Demonstration", Group Painting and Exhibition -This is a very special program combining lecture time, demonstration and hands on painting by the participants. Designed for any size group, it offers the opportunity for clients to meet with one another while learning a bit about the process of creating a successful painting. Most importantly, it is an opportunity for the spouses to bond and make their own unique marks on the time spent in Puerto Rico.

The artist presents a lecture and demonstration as entertainment during a welcoming function for the spouses. An entertaining speaker, Laird presents her own personal insights on the "what and why" of what she hopes to accomplish with her paintings and teachings. While speaking, she will be working on a spontaneous, lively, colorful mixed media painting.

A large piece of watercolor paper (27"x40") and various art materials will be set up near the exit of the room. Upon leaving, the challenge to the guests will be to "make their own mark" on the canvas, in what ever fashion and size they choose... but they must make a mark of some kind. The on the last evening of the convention, the finished piece (matted and framed) will be displayed and then presented to the company as a gift from the spouses and families of the individuals attending the event. They too, will have made their mark!

Art Demonstration by Jan D'Esopo

Your destination will be the home of a very interesting local artist, Jan D'Esopo. Originally from New Haven, she has made Old San Juan her permanent residence for the last 36 years. For the last 12 years, Jan has opened her home for special activities. You will be greeted at the Ferre Garden by Jan and her staff. All the areas and rooms in this unique house have been named after family members or the artist's own inspiration.

Description:

First floor Tour - To show your guests around and get acquainted. Approximately 20 minutes.
Ferre Garden - Welcome Drink
Captain's Nook - Appetizers
Print Room - A variety of drinks, juices red & white wines, will be served to welcome your guests.
Second Floor Tour - Approximately 10 minutes.
Music Room - Short oral history on the house by Jan.
Third Floor - Approximately 30 minutes tour
Wine deck - Spectacular view of the whole city
Ocean Suite - Inside one of the suites and down to the wine cellar
Wine Cellar - Originally built by the Spaniards as a water cistern.
First Floor - 1 hour of socializing among the guests and their hostess, Jan.
"Pozo" Patio - Area where Jan will give the demonstration of her sculpting or painting techniques.

"A taste of Puerto Rico" - For many years Puerto Ricans have been characterized as eating only rice and beans. Even though Puerto Ricans form the largest group of Hispanics living in cities like New York, little or nothing was known about the richness of Puerto Rican food culture. The traditional cuisine is the result of three heritages: the native, the Spanish, and the African. This cooking classes that we provide, will enable you to taste the rainbow of flavors and learn valuable information about Puerto Rican Cuisine.
